LAWAI, Kauai (HawaiiNewsNow) - Two people living in Lawai are without a home after a fire ripped through their house early Monday morning.

According to the Kauai Fire Department, the fire broke out around 1:10 a.m. at a two-story house on Wawae Road. The home was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters from Kalaheo and Hanapepe arrived.

Both residents were able to safely escape without injury.

It took crews just over an hour to get the fire under control.

The fire reportedly started on the first floor, fire officials said, but quickly spread.

The home is considered a total loss and damages are estimated at $700,000.

Volunteers with the American red Cross assisted the couple. The cause is still under investigation.
