KAHULUI, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Volunteers spotted just 529 humpback whales off Maui over the weekend, as part of annual count.
That's about half the number spotted off the island at the same time last year.
Meanwhile, the count also came up with 209 fewer whale pods compared to 2017.
Officials couldn't immediately explain the lower numbers, but said it could be because the peak of humpback whale season is happening earlier or later than it has historically.
This is the 30th year of the count.
