MAUI COUNTY (HawaiiNewsNow) - A fire in Kanaio caused significant damage to a Maui home Saturday morning.
Residents and passerby contacted first responders about the fire and Upcountry Firefighters made it to the scene at 6:03 a.m.
By the time Kula firefighters made it to the home at 6:34 a.m., the one story building was almost completely burned to the ground. By this time, the roof had collapsed and only a few structural pieces remained.
Three fire companies, a water tanker and battalion chiefs from Kula, Makawao, and Kahului responded to the fire.
Fire crews had to use an off-road mini pumper truck through a road with rough terrain to reach the 900-foot home a quarter-mile from the Piilani Highway.
The fire was successfully contained at 7:39 a.m. and completely extinguished by 10:11 a.m. The house was vacant, there were no injuries, and firefighters have not yet determined the cause of the fire.
Damage to the structure and its contents was an estimated $195,000.
