HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Honolulu's rail authority says it overpaid to relocate some property owners — to the tune of about $3.8 million.

A new relocation contractor discovered the discrepancies and excess payments in more than a dozen transactions.

The project will reimburse that money to the federal government, and leaders are promising better oversight.

In a letter to the Federal Transit Administration, Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation CEO and Executive Director Andrew Robbins said the agency is "fully committed to successfully and responsibly completing the Honolulu rail transit project."
