WAILEA, Maui (HawaiiNewsNow) - A California man nearly drowned while snorkeling in waters off South Maui on Wednesday, officials said.
Emergency crews were dispatched at around 9 a.m. after receiving reports of an unresponsive person pulled from the water at Ulua Beach.
When they arrived, they found a 78-year-old man barely breathing and with a weak pulse. Crews performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the man and were able to get his heart rate to a normal rhythm.
Paramedics treated and transported him to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition.
The man was using a traditional two-piece mask and snorkel.
