KAPAAU, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - - A 66-year-old man died Monday night after crashing into a tree in Kapaau, Big Island police said.
The victim has been identified as Myron Okubo, of Kapaau.
According to authorities, Okubo was driving a pickup truck north on Keokea Beach Road before 3:30 p.m. when somehow he ended up being dragged outside the vehicle. The pickup then veered across the roadway, went down an embankment and struck a tree, causing him to be pinned.
He was taken to the Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a few hours later.
Authorities are still investigating, but it does not appear that speed is a factor.
An autopsy has been ordered to determine Okubo's exact cause of death.
This is the third traffic fatality this year compared to four at this time last year.
