Business Report: How federal spending breaks down when you count everything

Most pie charts show the spending that can be increased or cut at the discretion of Congress. But most federal spending is locked in by law. So what if we put that into the pie chart?

Health Care 26%
Social Security 24%
Defense Spending 15%
Non-Defense Spending 15%
Interest on the Debt 7%
Other Mandatory 13%

This makes it easier to understand why deficit hawks are concerned about increases in discretionary spending, and why House Speaker Paul Ryan keeps saying it will become necessary to reduce Social Security, even though that could involve breaking promises to seniors. This is what's keeping him up at night. Of course, what he might do about it is what's keeping YOU up!
