KUALOA RANCH, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Flooding waters caught some motorists by surprise Sunday afternoon.
Three people, including a woman and a child, were rescued from vehicles trapped in fast-flowing flood waters near Waikane Valley Road.
The Honolulu Fire Department says they rescued three people around 3:40 p.m.
Multiple vehicles were caught in 2-3 feet of water. The water was flowing downhill at a rate of roughly 17 mph, HFD says, making it difficult for the stranded motorists to escape.
Rescuers used rescue boards, ropes and life vests to safely get the people out of their vehicles.
No one was seriously injured.
The vehicles remain stranded in the water. A tow company will have to wait until flood waters subside to remove the vehicles.
Officials want to remind drivers to "Turn around, don't drown." A few inches of water on the roadway can easily cause a driver to lose control of their vehicle.
