MAKAHA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Surfers from all walks of life hit the waves at Makaha Beach Saturday.
The 42nd annual Buffalo Big Board Surfing Classic kicked off Saturday morning and attracted dozens of surfing enthusiasts.
The event featured more than a dozen surfing divisions and welcomed all ages and types of surfers.
"The main thing is to thank God for the day, the wind, the waves, all that before we go in the water and surf. So we always do this take out our ho'okupu and say a prayer and that's it," Surf legend Buffalo Keaulana said. "That's the main thing is having everybody thanking God for this day."
This year's contest is dedicated to the Hokulea and those who helped a total of 4,000 Leeward students board the canoe at Pokai Bay in 1976 and 2017.
The friendly competition runs through President's Day and wraps up next weekend.
