HANA, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 38-year-old Lahaina man apparently drowned this weekend while swimming in a popular spot known as "Puka."
It's the 11th ocean-related fatality in Maui County so far this year.
The man got into trouble about 12:25 p.m., while swimming with a group of friends off East Maui.
First responders said the man was swimming with six other friends after making an hour-long hike down a trailhead from Hana Highway.
It's not clear what went wrong, but the friends said they found the victim floating unresponsive in the water and jumped in to get him.
They started CPR, and someone from the group hiked out to the highway to call 911.
The victim could not be revived and was flown out to the highway, where paramedics pronounced him dead.
