Kakaako to get another makeover as artists turn walls into works of art

KAKAAKO, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Starting Monday, over 100 local and international artists will collaborate on projects to repaint Kakaako's murals.

For the event's fifth year, global art network POW! WOW! will be beautifying Kakaako's walls while paying homage to cultural and historic events in Hawaii.

Canvas for these large-scale paintings are provided by Kamehameha Schools, who partners with the art network every year to present these murals to the local community.

Local artist Kaihau Beamer will be painting a mural that pays homage to King Kalakaua's 1881 tour around the world, while Kai Kaulukukui, another Native Hawaiian artist, will be working on a piece that puts a spotlight on endangered animals indigenous to Hawaii.

The collaborative community art event kicked off with a night market Saturday replete with food trucks and musical entertainment.

Artists will be painting murals from Feb. 12 through 17.
