WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hundreds of Hawaii High School student athletes and their families gathered at the Sheraton Waikiki hotel ballrooms this morning. It is the 2018 National Letter of Intent Signing Day where student athletes from across the nation sign on the dotted line, letting universities across the country know who they will play for in athletics for the upcoming year.
While many are just happy to be able get scholarships to continue their education, the ability to play where you feel you want to be is a plus. But really, that's where the REAL work begins.
Congratulations to Pearl City High School's Daelenn Tokunaga; she will play soccer at the University of Hawaii-Manoa; her brothers have played for UH and she wants to play at home. Jonah Panoke was beaming with pride, surrounded by his family, wearing his University of Hawaii hat. It's also that notion of playing at home and being with the "Home Team" that makes it all worth it.
The student athletes that signed are only the ones that wanted to publically sign; there are many more that are signing papers with colleges today. Congratulations to the student athletes of 2018 that are continuing their education.
