This February, dim sum teahouse Yauatcha Waikiki celebrates Chinese New Year by commissioning leading London artist, Lydia Kasumi Shirreff, to create innovative Chinese lantern art installations. The global celebration also includes a special menu featuring the contemporary Cantonese dim sum, for which the restaurant is renowned.
With the Year of the Dog beginning on Friday, February 16, 2018, the stunning artwork will be on display in Yauatcha Waikiki starting February 5th. The artist’s interpretation celebrates the Chinese paper lantern - an iconic emblem of Chinese New Year - in a modern way with designs that tell a visual story. A second London artist will showcase his designs in Yauatcha locations in London and Houston. This campaign evolved from Yauatcha Soho’s annual red lantern Chinese New Year decorations, a tradition which began at the Michelin-starred restaurant in London five years ago.
Lydia Kasumi Shirreff was selected on the merit of her existing works which caught the eye of the Yauatcha team. As Chinese lanterns are traditionally made of paper, it was a natural decision to select a leading paper artist for the commission. With a background in fine art, Lydia Shirreff specializes in sculptural paper techniques, and has been described as ‘the queen of paper sculpture.’ Lydia’s artwork pays homage to the traditional art form of ‘kirigami’ paper cutting. Her designs comprise 48 cut paper-style lanterns made from brushed gold and red card which derive inspiration from brutalist and modernist architecture and reflect the high-rise cityscape with a geometric, 3D effect.
From February 5-March 4, Yauatcha Waikiki will serve a celebratory Chinese New Year menu with dishes inspired by the annual celebration and featuring ingredients traditionally believed to bring good fortune. The menu will offer two dim sum dishes: Salted egg yolk custard sesame ball (representing togetherness) at $10 per dish and Steam Dover sole roll (symbolizing financial prosperity) at $10 per dish. Main dishes will include: Golden fortune prawn in lime sauce (seafood has connotations of good luck) at $16 per dish, Steam scallop in black bean sauce with glass noodle at $30 per dish, Stir-fried duck breast with hazelnut in mala sauce at $20 per dish, and Seafood braised rice in lotus leaf at $20 per dish.
?In a nod to the art, guests will enjoy the Haoyun Lantern petit gâteau dessert with soy caramel mousse, mandarin confit (citrus is believed to bring luck, whilst ‘haoyun’ translates to ‘lucky’), and sesame sable. A number of limited edition macarons will also be available, including flavors such as vanilla orchid, a lucky flower for 2018, raspberry Szechuan pepper, vibrant red in color to reflect Chinese New Year celebrations, and kumquat cashew.
