Elderly driver seriously injured after crashing into a Kalihi home

KALIHI (HawaiiNewsNow) - An elderly man was hospitalized with serious injuries after a crash along a steep Kalihi road Monday night.

It happened just before 6:30 p.m. along Kula Kolea Dr.

Marcy Freitas said she was sitting in her living room when she heard a loud screeching noise which prompted her to look out her front door.

That's when she saw a red pick-up truck speeding downhill towards her house.

It ended up slamming into two vehicles parked in the home's driveway and carport, then into a storage shed in the backyard.  The truck eventually stopped, coming to a rest on the home's fence.

"I was kind of frozen then said, 'Ok I got to snap out of it because I got kids in the house.' So it was pretty crazy," said Freitas.

Debris scattered throughout the property as the driver waited for help. Freitas said the driver was moaning and hanging halfway out of the driver's side window.

She called 911 and paramedics took him to the hospital in serious condition.

The roof and patio of the home are damaged. No other injuries were reported.

Residents say the driver lives up the hill. It's unclear how fast the driver was going or what caused him to lose control. The crash is under investigation.

We have a crew on scene. Tune in to KGMB & KHNL at 10 p.m. for the latest details.
