HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The rail line is headed to town.

On Friday, crews started work on the first set of support structures for the third and penultimate phase of the 20-mile rail project.

The structures are the first to be built in the 5.15-mile segment that begins near Aloha Stadium and snakes past the Middle Street Transit Center.

This phase of the project also includes construction of an elevated guideway through Honolulu's airport.

The final phase of the project — from Kalihi to Ala Moana — is set to wrap up in 2025.

Honolulu's $8.1 billion rail line is the biggest public works project in the history of the state, and has been beset with problems, from funding issues to problems with securing land in the dense Downtown corridor.

Experts have said that as the rail line nears the urban core, it's expected to run into more issues.

And, of course, expect lots of traffic disruptions.
