HILO, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) - Rescuers are still attempting to search for a Chicago nurse who was swept away in waters nears Piihonua Falls last week.

Hawaii Fire Department officials say a man and a woman in their twenties were hiking in an area above the falls on Friday when they attempted to cross the Wailuku River and were swept downstream by quickly rising waters.

The man was able to make it to the riverbank, but he lost contact with the woman, who has since been identified as Kelly Mrowinski. Authorities at the Hilo Medical Center say Mrowinski has been working at the facility since the beginning of 2017.

Fire department officials say that if nothing is found on Thursday, they will wrap up their search efforts on Friday.

This story is developing and will be updated.
