Hawaii welcomes new fast-attack submarine: The USS Missouri

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Fast-attack submarine USS Missouri will arrive Friday in the islands — its new home port.

The submarine with 140 sailors and officers is set to arrive at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam about 4:30 p.m.

Families of crew members started arriving in Hawaii in November.

The Missouri will be the sixth Virginia-class sub whose home port is Pearl Harbor.

Missouri is the fifth Navy ship to be named in honor of the state of Missouri.

The last USS Missouri, the legendary battleship, saw action in World War II, the Korean War and the Persian Gulf War.

The battleship was also the site where Fleet Adm. Chester Nimitz, Gen. Douglas MacArthur and many other U.S. and allied officers accepted the unconditional surrender of the Japanese at the end of World War II.

Officials called the Missouri submarine the most sophisticated of its kind in the world.

At 377-feet long, it's slightly longer than a football field.

It can dive to depths greater than 800 feet and will operate at speeds in excess of 25 knots submerged.
