The only time Bellator flyweight champion Ilima-Lei Macfarlane lost her belt didn’t happen inside of a cage.
The Honolulu native won Bellator’s inaugural flyweight belt at Bellator 186 last year, but that belt was burned in a house fire on Kauai where she was visiting for a photoshoot. She later found the belt in the wreckage, and it was completely turned into ashes.
But Macfarlane didn’t have to wait until her next fight to get a new belt as she was given a new one this past Saturday at Bellator 192.
In case you don't know the backstory, my belt burned in a house fire about a week ago when I was back home in Hawai'i. @BellatorMMA surprised me this past weekend at #Bellator192 with this ????????????. pic.twitter.com/QFjPNBICvG— Ilima-Lei Macfarlane (@ilimanator) January 23, 2018
Macfarlane expressed her gratitude to her bosses at Bellator for the gesture on Instagram.
“I’m sleeping with my shiny brand new belt that Bellator MMA surprised me with this past weekend,” Macfarlane wrote in her Instagram post. “Not letting it out of my sight! I have the greatest sponsors and I fight for the best promotion in the world!”
