Officials say a man from California was snorkeling by himself before he apparently drowned in South Maui waters on Thursday afternoon.

At around 12:40 p.m., beachgoers found the 50-year-old man floating face down about 15 feet from shore off Kamaole Beach Park III.

Emergency crews attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but he later died at the scene, officials said.

His identity has not been released.
