Vet on the Set: 'Catnip and cats' - Kitty Bliss

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Large cats such as lions and household cats like catnip.  Not all cats are affected by catnip.  Approximately 50 percent are affected.  Catnip is from the mint family and has a citrus type of scent.  It is easy to grow.  You may want to hang your catnip from a tree, because if I didn't do that, the neighborhood cats will roll in it and destroy it.  Kittens under four months old usually don't respond to catnip.

The active ingredient is an oil called nepetalactane and some cats are genetically predisposed attracted to it.  You can purchase dried catnip at pet stores. The oil will dissipate slowly, so it is best to store it in the freezer in an air proof container.

Also, after using the catnip, your cats will act goofy....they will roll and rub themselves in the catnip.  They will lick themselves.  The effect will last only about ten minutes and there is a two hour refractory period.  It is not addictive and is safe.  You can add catnip to toys, bedding and their scratching posts to make them attractive to the cats.

The CFA Cat Show is happening on Saturday, January 20 at McCoy Pavilion at Ala Moana Park at 10 a.m. til 3 p.m.  There are only three shows each year in Honolulu, so don't miss seeing the beautiful cats at this show.
