Heads up, gardeners: Little fire ants are spreading on Maui

MAKAWAO, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Two new infestations of little fire ants have been discovered on Maui.

One was reported by a Hana resident and the other was discovered at a one acre site at a South Maui nursery. Inspectors from the State Agriculture Department made the discovery the week of Dec. 4.

Experts say the infestations could be coming from the Big Island.

"That's particularly problematic. It's a nursery and people might be buying plants from them and spreading the infestation," said Brooke Mahnken, Little Fire Ant Coordinator for the Maui Invasive Species Committee.

Mahnken says the nursery voluntarily quarantined its infested material so it could be treated and is back open for business. He says there are seven active infestations of the stinging ants on Maui.

On Oahu, fire ants have been found in Mililani, Waimanalo and other neighborhoods.
