12-hour standoff in Puna ends with death of 1 man

PUNA, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 12-hour-long standoff in Puna has ended with one man dead, Big Island police said Tuesday.

The incident started around 12:20 a.m.

Residents reported gunshots at a home on Kamanu Street, and authorities responded.

When officers arrived on scene, they were confronted by an armed man sitting in a parked vehicle in the driveway. Shots were fired, though police say it is unclear where if any of the shots were directed towards officers.

Area roads were closed as the scene remained active.

The lone subject remained barricaded throughout the day. A Special Response Team from the Hawaii Island Police Department along with crisis negotiators later arrived.

Despite establishing communication with the individual, police say the man apparently shot himself just before 1 p.m. and died.

A single occupant of the home where the barricade took place was able to safely escape.

All roads in the neighborhood have since reopened.

The man's identity has not yet been released. An autopsy will determine his exact cause of death.
