HAUULA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Police have opened a negligent homicide case after the driver of a pickup truck crashed into a tree, killing an 18-year-old man and injuring two other people in Hauula on Tuesday morning.

Police Lt. Andre Peters said the truck was speeding down Hauula Homestead Road before it crashed and flipped over at around 4:20 a.m.

All three of the occupants were trapped in the truck until Honolulu Fire Department crews extricated them.

The 18-year-old man was pronounced dead, while the 27-year-old male driver and 22-year-old female passenger were taken to the hospital in critical condition. Their conditions were later changed to serious condition.

The occupants were not wearing their seat belts.

The driver is suspected of driving under the influence, Peters said.

Police closed off Hauula Homestead Road near Kukuna Street.
