Rainbow Wahine can't pull off comeback against Cal State Fullerton, 69-57

The Rainbow Wahine basketball team couldn’t overcome a slow start in their Big West Conference opener against Cal State Fullerton earlier today, losing 69-57 at Titan Gym.

The Wahine (7-7, 0-1 BWC) trailed 20-12 at the end of the first quarter but came back strong in the second period, trailing by just six points at the break.

Another strong third quarter put the Wahine in striking distance, but Fullerton’s 21-11 run in the fourth quarter closed out the game for the team’s sixth win of the season.

Hawaii struggled to shoot the ball as a team -- shooting 41.1 percent from the field -- but senior forward Sarah Toeaina put up strong numbers in the loss, shooting 9-of-16 for a game-high 23 points.

The Titans (6-8, 0-1, BWC) were led Jade Vega, who scored 19 points and Daeja Smith, who notched a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards.

The Wahine will continue their road trip as they take on UC Davis this Saturday. Tip-off is set for 12 p.m. HT.
