Business Report: The National Movers study

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - United Van Lines for 40 years has tracked interstate migration. The top out migration states are Illinois, New Jersey and New York. For every person moving to New York, two move away. The top IN-migration state was Vermont. A lot of New Yorkers move to Vermont for the lifestyle. South Dakota had lots of in-migration as people moved there for fracking jobs.

Other states with more in- than out0migration are Colorado, Washington state, Nevada, Idaho and especially Oregon, which has been welcoming a high level of transplants for decades. Hawaii has less migration than some states, either way. The cost of living is a deterrent while everything else is an attractant.
