MUSKEGON, MI (WOOD/CNN) - White-out conditions across an icy Michigan highway triggered a major pileup on Friday afternoon. The wreck took place along U.S. 31 in Muskegon Township, located northwest of Grand Rapids.

Several cars and trucks were damaged. Some of them ended up in a ditch.

In all, police say 40 vehicles were involved in the chain-reaction wreck.

It all reportedly started when a car spun out of control in near zero visibility.  A state police cruiser was also caught up in the mess.

A parade of tow trucks arrived on the scene to get the vehicles off the highway, which was shut down for nearly three hours. Police say amazingly that only three people suffered minor injuries.
