The largesse of Jay Shidler? Well, that's the gift that just keeps on giving. And when I say "keeps on giving", I mean for the next one hundred years! Yes, as a UH graduate, noted local resident, and big-time investor, Mr. Shidler has increased his odds for increased success at UH's business school by providing UH with the ground leases to properties throughout the mainland. For the next 20+ years, UH-Manoa should realize between a half-million dollars and $1.5-million per year, but that number should grow to upwards of $20-million a year coming back to UH way down the road.
Exciting opportunities exist for UH with this annual windfall, like reducing or eliminating tuition on some fronts, adding more scholarships, bulking up its burgeoning business school staff, increasing the quality of the business curriculum, and pushing for more innovation as it hopefully becomes one of America's top echelon business schools in the decades ahead. This amazing gift adds to Shidler's legacy at UH, with gifts now totaling over $225-million in the past decade or so.
