New York stage actress/singer comes home to star in local production of The King and I

The I’m A Bright Kid Foundation is excited to announce its production of the award-winning Broadway hit, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s THE KING AND I. The production opens on Sept. 8th and runs through Oct. 1st at the Paliku Theatre on the campus of Windward Community College in Kane‘ohe.

The I’m A Bright Kid Foundation is a non-profit organization started by Ron Bright’s former students. Bright was Castle High School’s theatre director and instructor for more than 40 years and was instrumental in founding the Castle Performing Arts Center. After retiring from teaching, Bright guest directed a string of highly acclaimed musicals for Paliku Theatre until his passing in 2015. 

One of Bright’s former students, New York City actress/singer Kathleen Stuart, has returned home to Hawaii to reprise her role of Anna. Stuart played the role under Bright’s direction at the Castle Performing Arts Center in 1998.

The King of Siam will be portrayed by Michael Ng, a local actor and drama instructor at Kaimuki High School. Allison Chu, Miss Hawaii 2016, has the coveted role of Tuptim and her love interest, Lun Tha, will be played by George Benavedes.  Mary Hicks, Iolani School music and drama instructor is directing the production with choreography by Andrew Sakaguchi. Bright’s eldest son and Royal Hawaiian Band Director Clarke Bright is orchestra conductor.

THE KING AND I will be performed Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. with a Sunday matinee at 4:00 p.m. Sept. 8 through Oct. 1.
