Agency proposes building a beer garden next to the Ehime Maru memorial

KAKAAKO, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A proposal for alcohol sales next to a Japanese memorial isn't sitting well with some.

State lawmakers are pressuring the agency that manages the Kakaako Waterfront Park to not build a beer garden near the Ehime Maru memorial.

The Hawaii Community Development Authority proposed selling alcohol in a facility that would be built on the same mound as the memorial.

The landmark honors the nine Japanese citizens who died when a U.S. submarine collided with the vessel in 2001.
