HANALEI, KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A jury on Kauai has acquitted a veteran police officer of negligent homicide in the "difficult and tragic" 2015 death of a 19-year-old man.

More than two years ago, Officer Irvin Magayanes was behind the wheel of a police cruiser when hit Michael Kocher, Jr. near the Kaumakani Post Office. Authorities say Kocher was lying in the street in a dark location at the time of the accident, having already been hit by one vehicle.

Magayanes was responding to the scene of the initial accident at the time of the crash, believing it to be nearly three quarters of a mile from where Kocher's body was actually located.

Experts testified during the trial that the accident was the result of a "horrible imperfect storm," noting that Officer Magayanes' speed was likely not a factor in the crash.
