Former kickboxing star Alexio sentenced for white collar crimes

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Former kickboxing star Dennis Alexio was sentenced by a federal judge on Thursday to 15 years in prison for a variety of white-collar crimes, including tax fraud and money laundering.

The 58-year-old was convicted last year in separate trials for illegally obtaining tax refunds and defrauding unsuspecting victims.

In January of last year, a federal jury found Alexio guilty of stealing more than $700,000 from the Interal Revenue Service by preparing tax returns for others, then falsely claiming tax refunds. Alexio then used cashier's checks to try and launder the money, prosecutors say.

Alexio also obtained $185,000 in silver coins and gold bars through theft and fraud from an internet metals company called APMEX. The theft was covered in a second trial that was held in September.
