The No. 6 University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine beach volleyball team (23-5) heads to California for the Big West Beach Volleyball Tournament, April 28-29, at the Pismo Beach Courts. The SandBows, who won the inaugural championship in 2016, will defend its title against five other squads, while also looking to bolster its odds for entry into the NCAA Tournament the following week in Alabama.
The No. 2 seed Rainbow Wahine earned an opening-round bye and will play its first match at 1:00 p.m. PT (10:00 a.m. HT) on Friday, April 28. The SandBows will meet the winner of the dual match between third-seed Cal Poly (12-21) and sixth-seed CSU Bakersfield (2-13).
Meanwhile, top-seed Long Beach State (24-6) also earned a bye and will face either No. 4 CSUN (6-12) or No. 5 Sacramento State (7-9) on the other side of the bracket. The double-elimination tournament continues on Saturday with the championship match scheduled for 1:00 p.m. PT (10:00 a.m. HT). A second match will follow, if necessary.
Five of the six teams in this year's tournament met earlier this month in the Big West Challenge hosted by Long Beach State in Huntington Beach, Calif., April 1-2. UH went 3-1 during that weekend with wins over Cal Poly, CSUN, and Sacramento State and a tight 3-2 loss against the 49ers. UH is 8-5 all-time against Long Beach State and unblemished (11-0) against the rest of the field.
