WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The California man arrested after a prostitute was found dead in a Waikiki hotel room told police conflicting stories about what happened, court documents filed Monday show.

Jeremy Henderson, 42, has been charged with second-degree murder.

The victim, 29-year-old Ashley Brandeberry, has a conviction and pending case for prostitution.

The documents filed Monday said when officers found her on a bed in a hotel room she had marks on her neck that looked like they had been made by a belt.

Police arrived at the Hilton Waikiki Beach Hotel on Kuhio Avenue early Friday morning after being called to assist in the use of a defibrillator. They were taken to room 1210, where it took Henderson 30 to 45 seconds to respond to the police knocking at the door.

Inside, they found Brandeberry unconscious and pale, with purple discoloration around her neck.

A police statement said Henderson alternated between distraught weeping and being able to speak clearly.

He told one officer that he had met Brandeberry at a karaoke parlor and came up to the room and began kissing, but then she asked to go to sleep and the next thing he knew she was unconscious and not breathing.

But the statement says another officer reported that Henderson told him that he and Bandeberry were having sex and she wanted to be choked during the act. Police also said that guests in a neighboring room had heard loud arguing about 45 minutes before police were called.

Henderson made his first appearance in court Monday morning. He is in custody on $1 million bail.
