Supporters of science took to the streets worldwide Saturday, using Earth Day as the setting to rally support for the field. In Hawaii, rallies were held on Kauai and Oahu to voice opposition to pending federal budget cuts.
On Kauai, a crowd gathered at the intersection fronting the Lihue Airport. Many carried signs expressing the value of science for the environment and the community as a whole.
A march on Oahu started at UH Manoa Saturday afternoon with speakers, exhibits, music and food. Marchers planned to walk from UH Manoa down King Street.
The worldwide demonstrations come as scientists fear President Trump will slash the federal budget for science, among other challenges.
