The fourth-ranked University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team will seek their first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation title when it faces top-seeded Long Beach State in the championship match, Saturday, April 22. First serve is 7:00 p.m. PT (4:00 p.m. HT) at the Walter Pyramid.
The third-seeded Rainbow Warriors (26-4) advanced to the title match following a straight-set win over No. 2 seed and defending tournament champions BYU, 25-22, 25-23, 25-22. The win avenged two earlier 3-0 losses to the Cougars in Provo, Utah and vaulted UH to its fourth MPSF Championship match. LBSU (26-3) got past fourth-seeded UC Irvine, also in straight-sets in the second semifinal.
UH is 0-3 all-time in the MPSF finals with losses in 1995, 2001, and '02. The Beach are also looking for their first title in their fifth championship match appearance (2004, '05, '06, '13). The teams have met three times in the MPSF Tournament with UH holding a 2-1 advantage with wins in the 2002 and '15 quarterfinals, both in Honolulu, and a loss in the 2005 quarterfinals also at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Earlier this season, the Beach swept the two-match series over the Warriors at the Walter Pyramid. In the opener, Hawai'i let a 2-0 lead slip away in a five-set loss (15-10 in 5th) while the Beach won the rematch in straight-sets (19-14-18), as UH, the nation's blocking leader, was held without a block.
Of note, the last four MPSF semifinals/finals hosts have won the tournament title.
