The University of Hawai'i softball team (25-16, 4-6 Big West) fell to Cal State Fullerton (24-19, 7-3 BWC) in the series opener, 5-0. Hawai'i's Brittany Hitchcock suffered the loss, dropping her record to 16-8 overall and 4-2 in the Big West. The Titans came through in the clutch, scoring all their runs on two outs on Friday night at the Anderson Family Field in Fullerton, Calif.
The Titans erupted for four runs in the bottom of the third. With two outs and two runners on base, Ariana Williams smacked a single up the middle to score both Delynn Rippy and Sydney Colenzo. Alexis Gonzalez followed with a two-run home run to give Fullerton a quick 4-0 lead after three complete innings.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Cal State Fullerton extended its lead to 5-0 on a two-out RBI-single by Bryanna Ybarra that drove in Zee Richard.
Hitchcock threw her 26th complete game of the season. She gave up five runs on nine hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
Kessler also fired a complete game in the shutout. She scattered six hits with nine strikeouts and no walks in seven innings pitched. She improved to 13-6 on the season. It was just the sixth time this season that the Rainbow Wahine were shutout in the game.
UH's leadoff batter, Danielle Garcielita racked up three of UH's six hits in the game. It was the fourth time this season she has recorded three hits in a game and third time that she's gone 3-for-3 at the plate.
The two teams will square off in a series-ending doubleheader on Saturday, April 22. First pitch at the Anderson Family Field is slated for 11:00 a.m. HT.
