HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Kauai Police Chief Darryl Perry is hoping to take the reigns as Honolulu’s next police chief, he says.

Perry, 66, has applied for the Honolulu police chief position, saying it’s time to pass the torch and help his former department.

“I believe that what I brought here to Kauai is a sense of professionalism, integrity and respect, and what I want to do is see if I can improve on what Honolulu has right now," he said. “They're a great department."

Perry started his law enforcement career with the Honolulu Police Department in 1972, when he was 21 years old.

Former Honolulu Police Chief Louis Kealoha was forced to retire in February because he is a target in an FBI public corruption investigation that includes his wife, a deputy prosecutor.

Since then, the Honolulu Police Commission says it has received more than 30 applications for the position.

The list of potential candidates will be narrowed down in June.
