Aloha, the Hawaiian Word of the Day is Mahele. The word mahele can be a verb meaning to divide and it can also be a noun meaning a division, piece or portion. When we hear the word mahele, often times it refers to the mahele of 1848, which was a land distribution act by Kamehameha III, Kauikeaouli. Essentially, the mahele was the beginning of private land ownership in the Hawaiian Islands.
