The Dow Jones Industrial Average consists of 30 stocks. When the index was new, it held railroads and industrial giants. Times have changed: the Dow includes McDonald's, Disney and Nike.
The stocks are weighted: half the index is 10 stocks. Goldman Sachs is worth the most, more than 7% of the whole Dow. 3M and Boeing are each worth about 6%. IBM United Health are just under 5% each. The next weightiest are Home Depot, Apple and McDonald's.
Four computer companies make up 14%. Three banking companies make up 13%. Four drug companies make up 12%.
Now you know a single industry can move the whole Dow.
