HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A week after imposing a 300 yard limit surrounding the Kilauea lava flow on the Big Island, some tours are getting permission to go inside the temporary safety zone.

Tour companies would need to submit a written request to the Coast Guard before entering the area.

The Captain of the Port then decides who gets access. Access is granted based on a number of factors including the vessel's condition, safety procedures and boaters' experience operating as a Coast Guard-credentialed mariner.

Once access is granted, boaters must abide by numerous conditions.

Mariners interested in submitting requests can email  D14-SMB-SecHonoMarineEventPermits@uscg.mil, or send them to:

U.S. Coast Guard Sector Honolulu,
400 Sand Island Parkway Honolulu,
Hawaii 96819
