The former executive director of a Waianae homeless outreach program has been sentenced to a year behind bars for stealing half a million dollars from the nonprofit.

Sophina Placencia, 34, had faced 10 years in prison for the thefts as head of Waianae Community Outreach.

She was also sentenced to four years probation, and must pay some $430,000 in restitution. Her monthly restitution payments must be at least $200.

Placencia was arrested in March 2015.

“This defendant stole over half a million dollars from a nonprofit whose mission is to provide services to families in need," state state Attorney General Doug Chin, in a news release. "This theft was a violation of that mission and a slap in the face to the people of Waianae.”
