KAHULUI, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A motorcyclist killed in a crash on Maui Friday night has been identified.

Police identified the man as 36-year-old Aaron Matthew of Lahaina.

The accident happened around 8:35 p.m. Police say Matthew was heading southbound on Kuihelani Highway when he rear-ended a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser heading in the same direction. The collision happened near the intersection of Waiko Road.

The motorcyclist lost control and fell off the bike. A car then struck the motorcyclist.

Matthew was pronounced dead at the scene.

Preliminary reports say Matthew was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

Police believe speed is a factor, however it is unclear if drugs or alcohol were involved.

This is Maui County's third traffic fatality of 2017. There were five fatalities at the same time last year.
