The Foodland on Beretania Street has been reopened to the public after a hazmat situation forced an evacuation early Wednesday, the Honolulu Fire Department said.
More than 20 firefighters responded to initial reports of a building fire at around 4:15 a.m. When they arrived on scene, they reported light smoke emanating from a compressor room inside the grocery store and received reports of a possible Freon leak from one of the refrigeration units.
A technician was able to mitigate the leak. The store reopened to the public around 5:50 a.m.
