A 20-year-old woman died Monday night in a head-on crash near Lapakahi State Park, Big Island police said.
The victim has been identified as Makaylyn Kalani, of Pa‘auilo.
The incident happened around 8:45 p.m. Authorities said Kalani was driving a Honda sedan on Akoni Pule Highway near the 13 mile marker when she collided head-on with a Toyota pickup truck traveling south.
Kalani was taken to the Kona Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The 24-year-old man and 19-year-old woman in the truck -- which landed in an embankment -- were injured and transported to North Hawaii Community Hospital.
Both lanes of Akoni Pule Highway were closed for about six hours, but they have since been reopened.
An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of Kalani’s death.
Officials are still investigating the cause of the crash. Anyone with information is asked to call police.
This is the seventh traffic fatality this year compared to five at this time last year.
