HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -- If you drive by Damien Memorial School, you can't miss it: The huge, new mural of the school's namesake.

The two-story mural of Saint Damien at Kalaupapa was painted by Kakaako graffiti artists John Weeks.

Weeks started the mural on Monday and plans to wrap up the project before students return to campus from spring break.

The mural features Damien overlooking the shores of Molokai with the Kalaupapa Church in the background.

The painting was envisioned and designed by a group of 16 students, who surveyed 500 of their peers about their idea, handpicked the artist and even raised funds for the project.

The same team of students is responsible for a stem of ongoing projects around campus.

“It’s another way to give them ownership of their school and to have their ideas and some of their thinking be visible on campus and land most definitely on the walls of campus,” school President Wes Reber Porter said.

There’s no grand reveal of the mural planned, but Porter said students will be in for a treat when they return to campus Tuesday.

“Kids go away on spring break and the last things they think about is campus and school, but when they come back they’ll be returning to campus with a bunch of new things like a dramatic mural that will be impactful for our community and our campus,” Porter said.
