The 26-year-old Kalihi man accused of killing his neighbor pleaded not guilty Monday.
Jhun Ley Irorita appeared before a judge by video teleconference from the Oahu Community Correctional Center.
He was in a wheelchair and his arms were bandaged.
State Department of Public Safety officials declined to release details on his injuries, but did say foul play is not suspected.
Irorita is accused of killing his neighbor, 40-year-old Helen Prestosa.
Prestosa was reported missing in November 2015 and her remains were found on Tantalus five months later. Sources say there was evidence of a violent attack inside her home.
On Monday, a judge confirmed his bail at $500,000 and set his trial for May 29.
