Two tourists were the victims of a terrifying kidnapping and robbery at a popular Maui destination, and police are continuing to search for the suspects.
Police said the incident happened about 6:50 p.m. at Nakalele Point, where a well-known blowhole is a popular draw.
The victims, a 25-year-old man and his 25-year-old fiancee, both from California, were held up a gunpoint, and their personal belongings — valued at more than $9,400 — were stolen.
The suspects, a man and a woman, then stole about $350 worth of items from their rental car.
But the incident didn't end there.
At that point, police said, the visitors were separated. The man took the male visitor to his older model Chevy SUV, while the female victim was forced into her rental car.
They were driven to various areas and at at Longs Drug in Wailuku, they were forced to purchase cash cards totaling $1,300.
The couple told police they didn't want to try to escape because they feared for their safety and their lives were threatened.
Eventually, the two were released with their rental vehicle. They called police after returning to their hotel.
Police said the male suspect in the case is about 5-foot-11, is in his 30s, and weighs about 180 pounds. He has short dark hair. The female suspect is 5-foot-5, is in her 20s and weighs about 120 pounds. She has long black hair and brown eyes.
