HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Hawaiian Word of the Day is Aumakua. Aumakua are familial guardians or ancestors who can assume the form of animals and plants or other forms occurring in nature.
Some forms that aumakua have been known to take are sharks, owls, plants or even owls. Families have reciprocal relationships with their aumakua. The families did not eat or harm their aumakua. And the aumakua in turn would warn and reprimand the family as needed.
