Twitter erupted on Wednesday after a federal judge in Hawaii blocked President Trump's travel ban. Trump supporters quickly jumped online with the hash tag "Boycott Hawaii". A lot of people mistakenly tagged @hawaii believing that it included the state. However, that twitter handle actually belongs to Sunrise geek Ryan Ozawa.
Ozawa, who is part of the duo on Geekbeat on Sunrise, said that his phone suddenly started beeping incessantly right after the ruling. He estimates that he was tagged 100 times in 15 minutes, an unusual occurrence for him. He said that the tweets were vitriolic in the beginning. However, after hours of seeing mean messages, they became comedic. Most of the people of Hawaii didn't seem to care that Trump supporters wanted to boycott our islands.
The state has never approached Ozawa to buy his handle, he said. And he doesn't plan to get rid of it any time soon. It's been his since the inception of Twitter in 2006.
You can hear Ozawa and Burt Lum on their show Bytemarks Cafe. It's on Hawaii Public Radio on Wednesdays at 6:30 pm.
