MAUNA KEA, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) - An unidentified woman died in a crash Sunday night on Hawaii Island after the car she was driving tumbled off Mauna Kea Access Road, authorities say.
The crash happened at around 7:30 p.m. approximately 1.2 miles below the Mauna Kea Visitor's Center.
Hilo police say the woman appears to have lost control of her Nissan SUV while traveling downhill, running off the roadway and overturning several times. The woman was takenn to the Hilo Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
Police believe speed was a factor in the crash. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
A passenger in the vehicle, identified as a 35-year-old French woman, was transported to the Hilo Medical Center in stable condition. She was later airlifted to the Queen's Medical Center on Oahu for treatment.
